Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island?

Airlie Beach is the mainland town where most day boats leave. Hamilton Island is a car-free resort island an hour out to sea. The right base depends on how many tours you want and how much you want to spend.

Most visitors pick one of two bases. Airlie Beach sits on the mainland, about 40 minutes by road from Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine, with every tour operator and every price level within a short walk or a bus ride. Hamilton Island is one of the 74 Whitsunday islands, with its own airport, a marina and a resort village, and no private cars.

Here is what each base gives you, which tours leave from where, and two ready-made plans: three days and five days.

The quick answer

Stay in Airlie Beach if you want the most tours, the widest range of prices and a free swimming lagoon on the foreshore. Pick Hamilton Island for a resort holiday with direct flights and a shorter boat ride to Whitehaven Beach, but fewer tour choices. Three days covers one Whitehaven day and one reef or flight day; five days adds the outer reef, a rest day and spare time for bad weather.

Is it better to stay at Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island?

For most travellers, Airlie Beach: more boats, more prices and more to do on a rest day. Hamilton Island suits a resort stay where one or two tours are enough.

Which is better, Hamilton Island or the Whitsundays?

The question mixes two things: Hamilton Island is one of the Whitsunday islands. The Whitsundays are 74 islands plus the mainland towns, and most of the islands are uninhabited national park.

Tourism Whitsundays counts 74 islands, and only five of them offer overnight stays: Hayman, Hamilton, Daydream, Long and Camp. The famous sights sit elsewhere. Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet are on Whitsunday Island, the largest island, which has no hotel at all. Heart Reef is out on Hardy Reef and can only be seen from the air.

Staying on Hamilton Island does not put you on Whitehaven. It puts you closer to it. Every Whitehaven trip, from either base, is a boat ride. Our Whitehaven and Hill Inlet guide explains which boats reach the northern end.

Whitehaven Beach is on Whitsunday Island, not on Hamilton Island.

Where do you stay when you go to the Whitsundays?

Most visitors stay in Airlie Beach or nearby Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket. The rest stay on one of the five resort islands, mostly Hamilton Island.

Airlie Beach is small. The main street, the lagoon, Port of Airlie (the Cruise Whitsundays terminal) and Coral Sea Marina are all within walking distance of each other. Cruise Whitsundays says the port is within walking distance of most accommodation in town.

Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket, a few minutes up the road, are quieter and often cheaper. Red Cat Adventures picks up from 24 hotels across Airlie Beach, Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket for the Thundercat eco-cruise, so staying a little out of town costs you nothing on tour day. Shute Harbour, further east, is the ferry terminal; the Hill Inlet cruise leaves from there and runs free buses from Airlie.

What is the best island to stay on in the Whitsundays?

It depends on the holiday. Hamilton Island has the most choice and its own airport; Hayman is a single luxury resort; Daydream and Long Island are smaller and quieter.

What the official tourism sites say about each island you can sleep on:

  • Hamilton Island: the island with the most choice, with hotels, restaurants, a supermarket and a spa; about 70% of the island remains natural (Tourism Whitsundays). Whitehaven tours leave from the marina.
  • Hayman Island: the northernmost island resort, InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef. Tourism Whitsundays presents it as a resort stay, not a day trip.
  • Daydream Island: about 30 min by ferry from Airlie and about 1 km long, with the Living Reef, a 200 m coral lagoon. Day visitors need a package; there is no standard day pass.
  • Long Island: mostly national park, with about 17 km of walking tracks. Palm Bay Resort and the adults-only Elysian Island Retreat take overnight guests.
  • Camp Island: rented out as a whole island, for groups.

For day tours, Hamilton is the practical island: the boats come to you. On Hayman, Daydream or Long Island you plan around the resort's own transfers and excursions.

Which resort in the Whitsundays is considered the best?

There is no official ranking. qualia on Hamilton Island and InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef are the two luxury resorts the official sites put forward.

Hamilton Island describes qualia as a luxury adults-only resort on the northern tip of the island, and qualia's own site shows recognition from Condé Nast, the Michelin Guide and 50 Best. Hayman's resort is the InterContinental, on the island furthest north. Both are claims by the resorts and the tourism boards; we have not ranked them.

Hamilton Island's other options, from its own list: Beach Club (adults only, on the beach), Reef View Hotel (four-star, many rooms with sea views, suits families), The Sundays (a 59-room family hotel), Palm Bungalows in tropical gardens, Yacht Club Villas and more than 100 holiday homes. If you stay on the island, Ocean Rafting's Hamilton Island day is the one tour on this site built for you: Hill Inlet, about two hours on Whitehaven and a reef snorkel. It has only a small number of reviews so far. One guest wrote: "A perfect day! Enough time at the spots because of the fast ride!"

Do I need a car in Airlie Beach?

Not for tours. The marinas are walkable, most boats pick up from hotels, and buses meet every flight. A car helps only for the hinterland, such as Cedar Creek Falls.

Port of Airlie and Coral Sea Marina are in town. Red Cat Adventures, Island Connections (the old SeaLink) and Fly Australia run courtesy buses from Airlie Beach to their boats and planes. At Whitsunday Coast Airport, Tourism Whitsundays says buses and taxis meet every flight, and the drive to Airlie takes about 40 minutes.

A hire car earns its cost only if you want to explore the mainland: Cedar Creek Falls is about 30 minutes inland, and parking at Port of Airlie is limited. On Hamilton Island you cannot bring a car at all. Visitors get around by golf buggy or the free Island Shuttle, which runs from about 7 am to 10:45 pm.

No car needed: the Thundercat bus collects you from your hotel and drops you back around 5 pm.

How many days are enough in the Whitsundays?

Three full days is the minimum for one Whitehaven day and one reef or flight day. Five days lets you do Whitehaven, the outer reef and a flight without rushing, with a spare day for wind.

Boats run in most weather, but strong wind can change a route or cancel a scenic flight. Leave one day free. Two plans from an Airlie Beach base, using the tours on this site:

Day3 days5 days

3Morning Heart Reef flight, afternoon freeOuter reef pontoon on Hardy Reef, a full day
4Rest day: Honeyeater Lookout walk, or the ferry to Hamilton Island
5Heart Reef flight, or a slow sail on Camira

From a Hamilton Island base, swap day 2 for the Hamilton Island Whitehaven day. For the outer reef from the island, Cruise Whitsundays quotes about 2 hours each way, against about 3 hours from Airlie. If your dates fall between November and May, read the best time to visit before you lock in the order.

How to spend 5 days in the Whitsundays?

Put Whitehaven on day 2, the outer reef on day 3, a free day on day 4 and the flight or a sail on day 5. Book the weather-sensitive trips early in the stay.

Why this order. The Whitehaven day goes first because it is the reason most people come, and a cancelled day can still move. The outer reef comes next: from Airlie it takes 2 to 3 hours each way to the pontoon on Hardy Reef, so it's a long day, and the day after should be easy. Our reef guide covers what you see there.

Day 4 costs nothing. Walk to Honeyeater Lookout in Conway National Park (3.6 km return from the turn-off, about 1.5 hours, steep; QPWS), or take the 60-minute ferry to Hamilton Island and climb Passage Peak. Day 5 is the scenic flight: the only way to see Heart Reef, since no boat can visit it. If you would rather stay on the water, Camira sails to Whitehaven with lunch, beer and wine included.

Prefer two Whitehaven days? Do the southern end on one and the northern end on the other. The best day tours guide lists which boat goes where.
