Cruise Whitsundays · Port of Airlie

A day on the outer reef at Hardy Reef

Cruise Whitsundays takes you 39 nautical miles out to a pontoon on Hardy Reef for about 4 hours of snorkelling, a semi-submarine ride and an underwater observatory. Pick it for clear outer-reef water and a stable base that works for non-swimmers too; it skips Whitehaven entirely.

Great Barrier Reef Adventure Cruise

About this experience

The listing still names the destination as Reefworld. That changed on 20 July 2026: Reefworld became an overnight-only pontoon for Reefsleep and Reefsuite guests, and Cruise Whitsundays moved its day trips to the refurbished Heart Pontoon, also on Hardy Reef (Travel Weekly). Same reef, same shape of day: about 4 hours at the pontoon, an underwater observatory, a semi-sub and snorkel gear with stinger suits. Our Heart Pontoon update has the details.

Boats leave Port of Airlie at 8:00 am and return about 6:10 pm, per Cruise Whitsundays. The crossing takes 2 to 3 hours each way depending on the sea, so a good part of the day is spent on board. Morning tea, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea are included. Scuba dives, a guided snorkel safari and a helicopter flight cost extra. Heart Reef is part of Hardy Reef too, but nobody can snorkel it: you only see it from the helicopter or on a scenic flight.

Why go this far? Outer reefs usually have clearer water, bigger coral gardens and more fish than the fringing reefs the Whitehaven boats stop at, says Tourism Whitsundays. The catch: no Whitehaven, a long day and free cancellation only up to 2 days before. Read our reef guide if you're weighing it against Cairns.

Tips before you book

  • Take seasickness tablets before you board. The open-water crossing is the hardest part of the day.
  • Book the guided snorkel safari if you're unsure in the water. A guide shows you where the fish are.
  • Bring a credit card for extras: dives, the safari and the helicopter are paid separately.
  • The government Reef charge is AUD 8.50 per person for a full day in 2026. Check at booking whether it's in your fare.
  • Wear the stinger suit at the pontoon. Stingers can be present all year, with the higher risk from October to May.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Great Barrier Reef cruise still go to Reefworld?

Not for day trips. Since 20 July 2026 Reefworld is overnight-only, and Cruise Whitsundays day trips use the refurbished Heart Pontoon, also on Hardy Reef. The listing may still say Reefworld.

Can you see Heart Reef on the pontoon day?

Not from the water. Heart Reef is protected and can't be snorkelled or dived. You can add a helicopter flight from the pontoon at extra cost, or book a separate scenic flight.

How long is the boat ride to Hardy Reef?

About 2 to 3 hours each way from Airlie Beach, depending on the sea. Hardy Reef is 39 nautical miles offshore.

Can non-swimmers do the reef pontoon trip?

Yes. The semi-submarine and the underwater observatory show the reef without getting wet, and snorkellers get stinger suits and gear.
